BOISE ID (August 16, 2013) – Idaho’s Health Insurance Exchange will soon be up and running. The Idaho Department of Insurance wants to enhance public awareness of the Exchange and provide resources to consumers trying to understand how it may affect them.
“Starting in January 2014 most people will be required to carry health insurance or pay a penalty. We encourage Idahoans to begin now to learn about the Health Insurance Exchange and be prepared to make informed choices for themselves and their families.”
The Idaho Health Insurance Exchange will be the marketplace where individuals can shop for health insurance and compare coverages.
- Policies sold in 2014 – inside or outside of the Exchange – must include a package of Essential Health Benefits (EHBs). If you are covered through a group plan, you will likely notice changes in your plan when it renews. A fact sheet about EHBs is available on the Department’s website.
- Broader coverage may result in increased premiums for some people.
- Subsidies – based on your projected income – may be available to you if you purchase health insurance through the Exchange.
- A penalty – in amounts that increase annually – will be applied to your income tax filing if you elect not to obtain health insurance.
Open enrollment for the Exchange will begin October 1. More detailed information about the Individual Mandate is available on the Department’s website, www.doi.idaho.gov.
