BOISE ID (June 28, 2013) – Starting July 1, 2013, Medicare beneficiaries using Original Medicare in the Nampa-Boise area will be required to use Medicare contract suppliers for selected durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS). A listing of zip codes included in the program and contract suppliers can be found at www.medicare.gov/supplier or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.
Original Medicare beneficiaries who need diabetic testing supplies will use a new national mail order program, also beginning July 1.
“Medicare beneficiaries should have received letters from Medicare in May informing them of this change,” says Phyllis Barker, supervisor of the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) office of the Idaho Department of Insurance. “Medicare beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage Plans will receive information from their plan regarding any changes and should contact their plan with any questions.”
These new programs are intended to reduce the instances of fraud and abuse. Round one of the DMEPOS competitive bidding program – which has been in operation in selected areas for the past three years – has saved Original Medicare over $200 million and resulted in lower pricing, continued access to quality supplies and minimal complaints from beneficiaries.
The SHIBA program is part of a network of state health insurance programs across the United States and its territories. Utilizing its network of trained volunteers and staff, SHIBA offers free and unbiased information, counseling and assistance regarding Medicare and long-term care insurance.
