BOISE ID (March 22, 2013) – A Senior Scam Jam will be held Thursday, April 25, at the Nampa Civic Center to provide opportunities for senior citizens, their caregivers and people with disabilities to learn about the latest trends in frauds and scams. Keynote speaker, Gavin Gee, Director of the Idaho Department of Finance, will teach attendees at this free event how to protect themselves and their loved ones from financial fraud.
Bill Deal, Director of the Idaho Department of Insurance, will give a presentation on current issues surrounding health care reform. Detective Tom Gerdes of the Nampa Police Department will speak on frauds prevalent in the local area.
The Senior Scam Jam will run from 8:00 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Continental breakfast and a free lunch will be provided. Door prizes will be given away at the conclusion of the event. Seating is limited; seniors are encouraged to register early by calling toll-free 877-926-8300. Registration will open March 25 and close April 22.
Seniors are favorite targets of scammers. Speakers from the Better Business Bureau, Idaho Legal Aid and Department of Insurance SHIBA program, Senior Medicare Patrol program, and Area IV Agency on Aging will educate seniors on safe investing, top ten scams targeting seniors, identity theft and Medicare fraud. Presentations on the foreclosure process and the psychology of fraud will be given by representatives of the Idaho Attorney General’s Office, AARP and Pocatello Neighborhood Housing Services. Three breakout sessions will be offered in Spanish.
A Shred-it truck will be on site for event participants. Free shredding is limited to one banker’s-sized box per participant.
The Senior Scam Jam is sponsored by the Idaho Department of Insurance and Idaho Department of Finance, the Idaho Commission on Aging’s Senior Medicare Patrol Program, City of Nampa, AARP, BSU Center for the Study of Aging, Idaho Legal Aid, Idaho Bankers Association, Better Business Bureau, Idaho Press Tribune, Channel 6, and Adelante Media Group.
